New JEA rate incentives for manufacturers

Mike Favo

I have been reading a book about the women and men that explore and research the deepest caves in the world. The author successfully pulls the reader into the caves and shows all of the risks and challenges endured by the cavers. Numerous death defying expeditions around the globe are detailed and the stories highlight the amount of teamwork necessary to have a safe and successful exploration. Regardless of all the many differences between each of these expeditions, one consistency is very clear: going down is both scary and exhilarating…coming back up is all hard work. The author describes the trip out of the cave as mountain climbing, through a waterfall, at night.

While the recession of the past 4 years is not something I would ever describe as exhilarating, it was definitely a scary downward trip. Likewise, climbing back out of this is a lot of hard work. There have been a few times where I felt we were climbing through waterfalls in the dark. In June, the Manufacturing community received the good news that JEA is going to throw us another rope to help make the climb out a lot less difficult. This rope comes in the form of a rate initiative that will provide discounts on incremental load increases from the baselines. These baselines will be calculated from manufacturer’s least electricity usage during fiscal years between 2008 and 2010.

This incentive is extremely important to manufacturing as the economy begins to rebuild itself. In the event that we add production in 2012, the incremental load increase would receive discounts on the energy and demand charges. Beginning in 2016 the discounts would scale back and would sunset in 2021. Essentially, additional production will yield additional discounts during this time period. It is our hope that this provides a competitive advantage to manufacturers in Northeast Florida and allows the Jacksonville area to develop to its full potential. If the initiative receives the Florida Public Services Commission’s approval, it will begin in October.

Like the cave explorations mentioned above, re-establishing growth in Northeast Florida will require a lot of teamwork. This rate initiative is an accomplishment that many individuals worked together over the past several years to achieve. My compliments and gratitude go out to all involved. I look forward to seeing what can be achieved next.

JEA approved the incentive and said it expects it will receive approval from the Florida Public Service Commission in the next several weeks.

Industrial water users saving millions of gallons

Anheuser-Busch InBev and Renessenz LLC, two of Duval County’s largest industrial water users, are saving millions of gallons per year by engaging employees in conservation efforts, implementing new technology and reclaiming more water.

Renessenz, a manufacturer of flavor and fragrance chemicals used in everything from laundry detergent to mouthwash, reduced water use from 270 million gallons of water in 2006 to 152.5 million gallons in 2010, according to the St. Johns River Water Management District. Reports show that Anheuser-Busch is using close to 500 million gallons less water today than five years ago, while still brewing the same amount of beer at its Northside Jacksonville plant.
