The new Stormwater fee invoice that you will receive in the next few weeks may be twice the bill you received last May. FCMA has a workshop on June 25 on how you can reduce this bill by as much as 50%.

The City of Jacksonville’s new Stormwater Utility Management Fee (SUMF) program that was rolled out in 2008 caught many local businesses by surprise. In fact, many had no knowledge of the fee until the invoice arrived in the mail in May.

Consequently, given the short time in which they were given to respond, many companies were not able to take advantage of the “Adjustments and Credits” provision included in the City’s SUMF program. In some cases, a company’s fees could be reduced up to 50% from the originally invoiced amount. With fees being assessed at roughly $421 per acre of impervious surface, significant savings can be gained by taking advantage of the “Adjustments and Credits” provisions. For example one company approximately 50 acres in size that received a 50% credit saved almost $9,000 in its first 6 months billing cycle. Another business with multiple properties in Duval County that received 30% in credits saved over $ 100,000 in SMUF fees for the same period.

Several of the credits are fairly straightforward and likely to be something that a company already has in place and/or is already doing. It would be just a matter of submitting the application for the credit. Others take a little more work, but also carry the greatest fee reduction value.

Once an adjustment or credit is achieved, it does not have to be applied for again and is reflected in all future SUMF annual invoices. Additionally, a business can apply for credit reductions at any time and can apply for additional credits later as they become eligible.

If you are interested in how your company might benefit from reducing its annual SUMF fees, please plan to attend this month’s FCMA EHS-sponsored workshop… City of Jacksonville Stormwater Fees: How to Identify and Get Credits from 7:30 – 10:00 AM on Thursday, June 25, at the Northeast Florida Safety Council. Come learn from the experience of fellow members who have taken advantage of the adjustments and credits savings, and from representatives from the City Of Jacksonville Public Works Stormwater Utilities Department discussing changes in the SUMF program. Rumor has it that SMUF fees will be increased for the next billing cycle.

There is much excitement and enthusiasm going on in the Membership Services Committee right now. As you may know, most associations, including FCMA, have membership drives every year. This is something that our association has always done, and today membership drives play an important role in sustaining an association. Who would have guessed that FCMA would have a record month in May for new members. So far, thanks to all of those who enlisted these companies to join FCMA. FCMA is strong today because of it’s members and the fact that each one becomes a great resource to the other members.

“Big Ticket” Goods on Are the Rise in the U.S.

According to GlobeInvestor.com, demand for big-ticket manufactured goods in the United States soared by the largest amount in 16 months in April, the second increase in the past three months.

New orders have risen in two of the past three months after six straight declines. Analysts believe this could be a sign that the deep recession in manufacturing may be bottoming out. But they believe a sustained rebound is still some distance away.

The 1.9 per cent April increase in orders was the largest one-month gain since orders advanced by 4.1 per cent in December, 2007, the month the recession began. Since that time, U.S. manufacturers have struggled with falling demand in both domestic and foreign markets.

More than 90 per cent of economists surveyed by the National Association for Business Economics are predicting that the current recession, the longest since World War II, will end by the end of the year.
