Workforce Development

The 2010 Workforce Development Committee is focused on providing the most up to date information and best practices to Human Resources personnel on common issues facing manufacturing. The committee sponsors periodic workshops, conducts an annual wage and benefits survey and serves as spokesman on federal, state and local legislation involving specific Human Resources issues. Through its new Customized Training initiative, it is also responsible for developing educational and training programs for members, continuing education for employees and working with local educational institutions to improve the skill level of students to better prepare them for manufacturing jobs. FCMA’s Special Interest Groups (SIGs) are also a result of this committee, of which the Maintenance and Reliability SIG began in 2009. Below are the significant initiatives and goals the Workforce Committee is dedicated to providing to the FCMA membership in 2010:
- Customized Training: This benefit is offered exclusively to FCMA members, and is being implemented based on a 30-year foundation of best practices from a similar program conducted by the South Florida Manufacturer’s Association. Utilizing the vast FCMA network, locally and nationally, we have access to a multitude of diverse subject matter experts involving every aspect of training and instruction regarding the manufacturing and logistics industries. This initiative is being coordinated by Joanna Scarboro (CPBA, CPVA, and MBA) whose subject matter expertise in coaching and training has been successful in the manufacturing and logistics communities. FCMA’s Amanda Starling will be assisting Joanna in the administration of the CT initiative. Please contact the FCMA office at 904-296-9664 or email Joanna or Amanda to see how we can assist with your training needs.
- Special Interest Groups (SIGs): The SIGs encourage participants identify similar issues for sharing of best practices and keeping up to date with current issues. Companies share changes they have made to realize savings in operations and facilities, allowing all involved to realize the value. The Maintenance and Reliability SIG and Plant Manager SIG are off to a good start!
- Workshops: Workshops are held monthly on topics generated by both current issues and emerging strategies, such as Health Care and Social Media Networking, along with ongoing significant HR related events that have local, state and federal relevance. Additionally, if you have a topic that is of interest or value to your organization, suggestions are welcome for upcoming workshops. FCMA will locate the subject matter expert that speaks the facts to ensure our membership is in compliance and that our members are the best informed in the industry.
- Wage and Benefit Survey: Are your wage and benefits packages competitive enough to ensure you will attract and retain the employee talent you require to be successful? By participating in this exclusive opportunity you can be confident in your answer to that question. Our goal is to collect information and disseminate it so that you can make decisions regarding the status of your current wage rate and what adjustments you may make to your own compensation package. The questionnaire has been sent to our manufacturers with a completion deadline of June 30. Results are scheduled for release August 1, distributed free of charge to all participants. Cost to non-participating FCMA members is $75 (only to members).
- Half-day Symposium: A sub-committee will be formed to set a date and explore opportunities and themes for a symposium that addresses the workforce needs of our members. Volunteers and inputs are welcome.
The Workforce Development Committee is a very interactive committee whose goal attainment and success is driven by the participation of FCMA members. Get involved, and immediately realize the value!
