Current and Emerging Environmental Issues Facing Northeast Florida
We are in a period of regulatory change probably unmatched since the National Environmental Policy Act and the initial establishment of the EPA and its associated landmark programs in the 1970’s. Regulations currently being contemplated may have significant wide ranging effects on individuals, our local manufacturing and industrial sector, and the First Coast community at large.
Please join us on November 4 as executives in leading positions on these regulations in our region help frame the issues and a discussion surrounding the significance of four emerging regulatory issues especially significant for the First Coast:
- Rick Ferrin, Executive Director of JaxPort, will frame the significance of proposed river water withdrawals in Central Florida on Port Expansion.
- Kirby Green, Executive Director of the St. Johns River Water Management District, will frame the Districts efforts to understand the sustainability limits of groundwater withdrawals in NE Florida, and opportunities for the Water Management District and individuals, industry, and utilities to expand water supply portfolios, especially conservation efforts.
- Jim Dickenson, CEO and Managing Director of JEA, will frame the national rulemaking surrounding the greenhouse gas cap and trade programs, and what effects they will have on the commercial generation of electricity and electric rates in our region.
- Greg Strong, Northeast District Director of FDEP, will frame the Numeric Nutrient Criteria issue that EPA is forcing Florida to set that has the potential to supersede the extensive TMDL work done in this region.
For each issue, we will frame the drivers for additional regulation, the potential impact to First Coast businesses, and what various groups are doing to explore these issues and to help shape public policy. This is a special gathering of community leaders discussing programs with wide-ranging impacts, exclusively for FCMA members. Manufacturing Executives and your EHS staff will not want to miss this.

- When will the jobs come back? - “Northeast Florida has lost 49,100 jobs since the recession began in December 2007. That works out to 7.7 percent of the total jobs in our area lost in the past 21 months.” Click here to read the JBJ articles on the employment situation for the Logistics and Manufacturing sectors.
- Jax employers cautious with hiring plans - “The economy might be making a modest comeback, but you wouldn’t draw that conclusion from the hiring plans of Jacksonville-area employers. Only 12 percent of employers plan to add workers in the fourth quarter.”
- Wake-up Call - “This week’s coverage of Northeast Florida’s lost jobs shows that the same lesson applies to employees — it’s time to sharpen your skills and prepare yourself for the changes that are coming in your industry. The chances are, changes are coming, whatever your business.”
- This recession has taken us all to school - “Vernon Law is credited with saying, “Experience is a harsh teacher; it gives the test first and the lesson afterwards.” We’ve all been taken to school by this recession.”
- Continuous Improvement — What’s the Future of U.S. Manufacturing? - “Some claim manufacturing is dying here but the numbers tell a different story.”
- Buried Under Inventory - “The economic downturn of 2009 should change some manufacturers’ approach to inventory management.”
- Why Customer Service Needs To Be More Than Mere Lip Service - “Offering the same level of customer support without a clear understanding of customer needs or a customer’s importance to your business can erode profit margins.”
- Sustainable Business Strategy: More Than Social Responsibility - “Suppliers can turn to an Eco-Operations oriented value chain which is a supply chain with sustainability intelligence built into it.”

How Leading Companies Thrive After the Recession
“Once the recession ends (and it will end), something interesting will happen. Some companies will emerge from the downturn in a better position than their competitors and start to outperform them. What sets these strong performers apart? Our work with companies suggests two factors: a commitment to innovation and a drive to become immersed in emerging growth markets.”
“Investing in new initiatives during a brutal downturn isn’t easy. While cost-cutting is often the norm, the mistake companies make is thinking short-term, having the savings flow directly to the bottom line, rather than reinvesting a portion into long-term opportunities. Without investments in innovation and new markets, growth will stall even as the economy rebounds.”
