A Cornerstone to the Future

Manufacturers in the State of Florida have worked tirelessly for years to find support on key issues facing our industry. The backbone and widely recognized spokesperson and leader representing our regional concerns has been Lad Daniels. The numerous accomplishments achieved by FCMA under his leadership include industrial land perseveration zoning, sound policy for TMDL, regulatory reform initiatives, tax incentive programs and working toward energy cost reduction. Lad has had the vision and foresight for almost two decades to understand issues facing the industry well in advance of regulatory implementation. FCMA has become a well respected association having now grown to almost 300 members.
As the economy of the state has turned, elected officials at all levels are seeking opportunities to broaden the economic base of the state. Finally, we find our citizens asking what can be done to get people back to work and create jobs. The state has actively been engaged in trying to reduce regulations, control tax burdens and provide certainty to all business sectors. The state is endeavoring to provide a much friendly business environment. The outlook currently being created by the Federal government is far less friendly with waves of new and increased regulations on businesses. The Federal is planning to increase jobs by spending more money on projects.
This year in the Legislature we will build on the previous progress of reducing regulations and finding incentives to manufacturers, shippers and other businesses. The policy of allowing the free markets to operate and provide wise incentives will create permanent jobs rather than short term work for government funded projects. Manufacturers will be a part of the discussion at the state level as we look for ways to improve the economy and get people back to work.
The cornerstone to our future has been laid by the fine work that Lad and our many members have strived to achieve. The public is becoming more aware of the importance of a broad based economy which includes manufacturing. I am deeply honored and pleased to build on the cornerstone established and believe we have a great future, which will require effort to achieve, but worthy of the effort.
I will be looking forward to working with you to learn more about your individual businesses and ways in which we can improve FCMA to better serve you and the region.

Small Manufacturers Rethink ‘Made In China’
“Like scads of other small American companies, Simple Wishes, a Sacramento-based maker of breast-pump bras, has been having its products manufactured in China. But lately, co-owner Joy Kosak has had second thoughts. The company’s shipping costs went up 15 percent last year, and the wage gap between China and the U.S., though still large, has been narrowing. “We would love a made in the usa label,” muses Kosak, who founded Simple Wishes with her three sisters in 2009.
“We’re witnessing a sea change in the way entrepreneurs think about manufacturing. Increasingly, China isn’t the bargain it once was, and making things in the U.S. seems less over-the-top expensive now. Like Simple Wishes, many small businesses that sell goods in the U.S. are rethinking whether manufacturing on the other side of the planet is worth it.”
